The choice of appropriate technical systems for the provision of society´s needs will be increasingly influenced by the impact that those systems are thought to have on health and the environment.
One of the topics discussed lately in that regard is the impact of metals on the environment. Until recently, the effects of metals and metal compounds have been evaluated primarily on man, mainly from the point of view of the hazards and risks resulting from "occupational exposure". Eventually it became clear that, since man is an intrinsic part of ecosystems, and cannot live if these ecosystems are disturbed and/or do not function properly, the potential impact of metals and metal compounds on the environment must also be taken into consideration.
On March 12–13 1998 a number of international experts (both from Swedish and international research organisations) were gathered for a symposium in Stockholm on the theme "The Impact of Metals on the Environment". Their lectures summarised the state-of-the-art with regard to the changes in trace metal contents in air, water and soil that can be attributed to natural phenomena and anthropological sources, and the effects of increased metal concentrations in the environment on health. The contributions from those lecturers who were kind enough to submit their manuscripts have been compiled in this report.
