During the years 1924-1996, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) has issued a series of commemorative medals to honour individuals who during their lifetimes made significant engineering, technological or economic contributions to Swedish industry. From 1997 onward, IVA will instead issue a series of commemorative publications on the same theme. Together, the two series will comprise a gallery of Sweden´s most prominent engineers and economists.

The purpose of this shift from medals to publications is to honour the memory of these individuals with something more than mere recognition. The memorial/commemorative volumes will provide detailed descriptions of their accomplishments, and the significance of their contributions for Sweden´s development. Thanks to modern information technology, the commemorative publications will be widely accessible through IVA´s web-site on the Internet.

The publication series was being inaugurated in 1997 with a tribute to Göran Fredrik Göransson, one of the great Swedish industrialists of the 19th century. In 1998 tribute was paid to the memory of Ernst Fredrik Werner Alexanderson, a pioneer in electrical engineering science. The 1999 publication is dedicated to the memory of the founders of Volvo, Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson.
